Optometrist Roles

Full-time and Part-time | School Hours | Term-time only


Join Painga Project’s vision team and help ensure every child has access to the eye care they need to succeed at school. As an Optometrist working on Celia, the Painga Project Mobile Vision Clinic, you’ll be part of a team delivering essential vision care directly to tamariki in our partner schools.


What the role involves:

  • Conducting full eye examinations for children

  • Diagnosis and treatment of vision issues

  • Referrals to specialists as required

  • Working closely with Vision Tamariki Champions, fellow optometrists, and Painga Project staff to deliver seamless care


What we’re looking for:

  • Experience working with children

  • A flexible and responsive approach - our clinic days are fast-paced and dynamic

  • Passion for equity and supporting tamariki to thrive in education


This is a school-based role, during school hours, with school holidays off - a great balance for optometrists looking for meaningful work with a family-friendly schedule.

Vision Tamariki Champion

As a Vision Tamariki Champion working alongside Celia, the Painga Project Mobile Vision Clinic, you’ll play a key role in supporting tamariki to receive and confidently use the glasses they need to succeed at school. As a Vision Tamariki Champion, you will walk alongside schools and whānau to ensure tamariki not only receive the glasses they need but also feel confident wearing them.


What the role involves:

  • Supporting tamariki with frame selection, measurements, fitting, and adjustments

  • Ordering lenses and ensuring tamariki receive them promptly

  • Working closely with Painga Project optometrists and staff to support follow-up care

  • Liaising with schools and whānau to ensure every child completes their care pathway


What we’re looking for:

  • Experience working with children and a warm, approachable manner

  • A fast-paced, adaptable approach - every day looks a little different

  • Full driver’s licence

  • A commitment to equity and the wellbeing of tamariki


This is a school-based role with an 8am start, offering flexibility and the option of part-time hours.

Kitchen Assistant | Term-time (Part-time)

Based at Papakura Intermediate School
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to around 11am (term time only)
No weekends | All school holidays off


About the role
Join our small, friendly team prepping and making fresh school lunches for tamariki. This role suits someone who wants work that fits within the school day.


You’ll do

  • Food prep, assembly and packing of lunches

  • Kitchen set-up, clean-down and stock checks

  • Working collaboratively to meet daily service times


You’ll bring

  • Previous experience in a commercial kitchen (required)

  • Organised, reliable, enjoys working in the kitchen

  • A practical, team-first attitude

  • Attention to hygiene and food safety

Volunteer Audiologists & Optometrists

Join Painga Project’s dedicated team bringing hearing and vision care directly to tamariki across South Auckland. We’re seeking volunteer optometrists and audiologists to support our school-based follow-up clinics.


As part of our team of incredible volunteers, you’ll work alongside our team in schools, during school hours - providing essential care, improving access to services, and helping ensure every child can see, hear and learn clearly.


You’ll bring:

  • A professional qualification in optometry or audiology

  • A current practising certificate (or supervision arrangement)

  • A passion for equity and community-based care

  • A few hours or days to contribute during the school term


We provide:

  • Full support and equipment

  • Opportunities to work in local schools where the needs are high

  • A chance to make tangible impact in the lives of tamariki

Volunteers

Supporting tamariki, kura and whānau in South Auckland.


Join our team of dedicated volunteers helping to create equity at the school gate. Painga Project provides hearing and vision screening, healthy lunches and practical support for tamariki across South Auckland - and volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.


We’re looking for caring, reliable people to help with a range of roles, including:

  • Assisting in the kitchen preparing and packing school lunches

  • Driving tamariki or equipment between schools and appointments

  • Supervising students during clinics and activities

  • Helping with hearing and vision screening alongside our trained team


No two days are the same - but every one makes a difference. If you can give a few hours a week, your time helps ensure every child can make the most of their education.


You’ll bring:

  • A caring, community-minded approach

  • Reliability and a willingness to help

  • A respect for and willingness to learn and follow set processes

  • A full driver’s licence (for driving roles)

  • A genuine desire to support tamariki and whānau
